Cody Thomas
Cody Thomas Latches on with Texas
Tue, Jan 28, 2025, 3:59 AM
Thomas signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Monday.
Analysis: Thomas spent the 2024 campaign overseas playing in the Japan Western League for the Orix Buffaloes, batting .242 with two home runs, 19 RBI and 18 runs scored in 89 games. He made it to the big leagues with the A's in 2022 and 2023 but appeared in only 29 games over this stretch. Thomas will have a chance to compete against big-league arms during spring training but will presumably open 2025 at Triple-A.
Jesse Chavez
Jesse Chavez Joins Texas as NRI
Mon, Jan 27, 2025, 9:12 PM
The Rangers signed Chavez to a minor-league contract Monday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Analysis: Chavez, 41, showed in 2024 with Atlanta that he still has something left in the tank, posting a 3.13 ERA and 55:19 K:BB over 63.1 regular-season innings. The 17-year veteran should have a decent chance to crack the Rangers' Opening Day roster as a middle reliever.
Evan Carter
Evan Carter No restrictions
Sat, Jan 25, 2025, 4:00 PM
Carter (back) no longer has any restrictions on what he can do in the field or weight room, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The promise Carter showed in 2023, when he batted .306 (1.058 OPS) in 23 regular-season games and appeared in 17 postseason games for the eventual World Series champs, never materialized in 2024. The outfielder endured a slow start and then a stress reaction in his back in May. He was eventually shut down after multiple attempts to ramp up. The 22-year-old added strength and bulked up during the offseason in preparation for what is expected to be a normal spring. A healthy Carter should be a regular in the Rangers' outfield, most likely center field.
Jon Gray
Jon Gray Would be open to closing
Fri, Jan 24, 2025, 3:26 PM
Gray would be open to serving as the Rangers' closer, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports.
Analysis: The club has a clear opening at closer, but there's been no indication that Gray might be under consideration for the role. However, a shift to the back end of the bullpen could make some sense for the veteran righty, who has had durability issues. Gray has made seven relief appearances for Texas between the 2023 postseason and 2024 regular season, and in those outings he posted a 1.42 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 18:3 K:BB over 12.2 innings. Of course, the Rangers could also continue deploying him as a starting pitcher, as Nathan Eovaldi might qualify as the only safe bet in the rotation. Gray had surgery in September to address a nerve issue in his right foot but is expected to be ready for spring training.
Chad Wallach
Chad Wallach Signs minor-league deal with Texas
Mon, Jan 20, 2025, 5:16 AM
Wallach signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Sunday, which includes an invitation to spring training, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.
Analysis: Wallach spent the 2024 campaign with the Angels organization in Triple-A Salt Lake. The catcher batted .247 with 12 home runs, 46 RBI, 31 runs scored and two stolen bases over 291 at-bats in 87 games with the Bees. Wallach will look to impress with Texas in the spring in order to potentially secure a spot on the team's roster for Opening Day, but he seems most likely to begin the year with Triple-A Round Rock.
Jacob deGrom
Jacob deGrom Kicks off throwing program
Wed, Feb 14, 2024, 10:21 AM
DeGrom (elbow) said that he began a throwing program Monday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.
Analysis: DeGrom rested Tuesday before he resumed throwing Wednesday, and he may continue to limit himself to a few throwing sessions per week as he begins a slow ramp-up process from last June's Tommy John surgery. The Rangers are hoping for deGrom and co-ace Max Scherzer (back) to make midsummer returns from their respective surgeries, though no firm target date will likely be in place for either pitcher until they advance to the point in their rehab that they're facing hitters. The 35-year-old deGrom hasn't pitched more than 100 innings in any season since 2019 and will fall short of that threshold once again in 2024 while he's likely out for at least the first half of the campaign.
Justin Foscue
Justin Foscue Projected at DH
Wed, Feb 14, 2024, 7:43 AM
Foscue is tentatively projected as the primary designated hitter, per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com.
Analysis: Foscue had a strong season at Triple-A Round Rock in 2023, posting an .862 OPS with 18 home runs, 84 RBI, 94 runs, 14 steals and more walks (85) than strikeouts (70) over 122 games for the Express. He's a natural second baseman but is blocked in the majors by Marcus Semien. As such, the Rangers plan to expose him to corner infield during spring training, which would set him up in a possible utility infielder/DH role. Designated hitter is the lone unsettled spot on offense for the Rangers.
Adrian Sampson
Adrian Sampson Gets NRI from Texas
Tue, Feb 13, 2024, 11:16 AM
Sampson signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Analysis: Sampson managed a 3.11 ERA over 21 outings (19 starts) with the Cubs in 2022 but made just nine minor-league appearances in 2023 while missing time following knee surgery. He's healthy now and will compete for a swingman job with the Rangers, but the 32-year-old's most likely destination to start 2024 is Triple-A Round Rock.
Adolis Garcia
Adolis Garcia Inks two-year pact with Texas
Thu, Feb 8, 2024, 11:04 AM
Garcia signed a two-year, $14 million contract with the Rangers on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: The two sides had been scheduled for an arbitration hearing Thursday, but that will no longer be necessary. Heyman says Garcia can push his total earnings over the two years to $20.25 million if he reaches incentives. The outfielder will be under team control for one additional year in 2026, as well, before reaching free agency. Garcia slashed .245/.328/.508 with 39 home runs in 2023 and added an additional eight long balls during the postseason.
Chasen Shreve
Chasen Shreve Will be in camp with Texas
Mon, Feb 5, 2024, 5:59 PM
Shreve signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Monday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Analysis: Shreve held a 4.63 ERA and 45:14 K:BB across 44.2 relief innings between the Tigers and Reds last season. The veteran left-hander has an uneven 10-year track record at the big-league level but will at least provide the Rangers with some experienced relief depth at Triple-A Round Rock.
Jose Godoy
Jose Godoy Gets NRI deal from Rangers
Mon, Feb 5, 2024, 5:56 PM
Godoy signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Monday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Analysis: Godoy, 29, spent 2023 at the Triple-A level between the Orioles and Yankees organizations. He saw spot action in the majors from 2021-22 and will give the Rangers some catching depth at Triple-A Round Rock.
Danny Duffy
Danny Duffy Back with Texas as NRI
Mon, Feb 5, 2024, 5:53 PM
Duffy signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Monday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Analysis: Duffy pitched at Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock in the Rangers organization last season, holding a 3.28 ERA and 42:29 K:BB over 35.2 innings. The veteran left-hander hasn't pitched in the majors since 2021 in large part due to arm issues, but the Rangers saw enough to like to bring him back on a non-guaranteed deal.
DJ Peters
DJ Peters Lands minor-league deal with Texas
Sat, Feb 3, 2024, 8:23 PM
Peters signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Jan. 31, Dave Coggin of PFA Baseball reports.
Analysis: Peters converted to pitching last season and had a rough go of it with the Tigers' Florida Complex League affiliate, holding a 6.23 ERA and 24:27 K:BB over 21.2 innings. He's 28 and it's a long shot that this works out, but the Rangers felt Peters showed enough potential as a pitcher to give him a flier.
Alex De Goti
Alex De Goti Catches on with Rangers
Fri, Feb 2, 2024, 10:11 AM
De Goti signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Jan. 26.
Analysis: De Goti spent the 2023 season at the Triple-A level between the Marlins and Twins organizations, posting just a .609 OPS in 55 games. The 29-year-old appeared in two games with the Astros back in 2021.
Corey Seager
Corey Seager Undergoes sports hernia surgery
Tue, Jan 30, 2024, 4:00 PM
Seager underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a sports hernia, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.
Analysis: Seager initially suffered the injury during the postseason and the hope was that it would heal with some extended rest over the offseason. That didn't happen, however, so the decision was made to have the operation. The Rangers are hopeful that Seager will be ready in time for Opening Day, but if he's not, Ezequiel Duran would figure to see extra playing time in the early going. Seager was the runner-up for American League MVP in 2023 and captured World Series MVP honors during Texas' run to the title.
Max Scherzer
Max Scherzer On track for workouts soon
Sat, Jan 27, 2024, 9:25 PM
Scherzer (back) said Saturday that he's about three weeks away from resuming workouts, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.
Analysis: Scherzer is six weeks removed from surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back and has progressed with no setbacks. The 39-year-old right-hander hopes to be ready to rejoin the Rangers' rotation by June or July, but it's a very rough timetable at this juncture.
Daniel Duarte
Daniel Duarte Designated for assignment
Sat, Jan 27, 2024, 9:07 PM
Duarte was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Friday.
Analysis: The Rangers needed to free up a spot on their 40-man roster for the addition of David Robertson. Duarte was just acquired from the Reds via trade last month after he had been dropped from their 40-man roster and he'll go through the waiver process again.
Jacob deGrom
Jacob deGrom Will resume throwing in spring
Sat, Jan 27, 2024, 12:47 PM
DeGrom (elbow) said Saturday that he plans to begin throwing again in the spring, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: DeGrom didn't specify the exact date he'll start his program, but he added that he's happy with the progress he's made in his recovery. The 35-year-old righty underwent Tommy John surgery in July to repair a torn UCL in his right elbow and is projected to rejoin the Rangers late in the summer.
Travis Jankowski
Travis Jankowski Sticks with Texas on one-year deal
Fri, Jan 26, 2024, 4:49 PM
Jankowski signed a one-year, $1.7 million contract with the Rangers on Friday, Buster Olney of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Jankowski made the team as a non-roster invitee last year and now gets a guaranteed contract after slashing .263/.357/.332 with one home run and 19 stolen bases over 107 contests. The 32-year-old outfielder looks tentatively in line to serve as the Rangers' fourth outfielder, although he could get pushed down in the pecking order when Wyatt Langford arrives.
David Robertson
David Robertson Lands with Rangers
Thu, Jan 25, 2024, 7:29 PM
Robertson signed a one-year contract worth between $11 and $12 million with the Rangers on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Robertson will join his ninth team in the last eight seasons, but he's been particularly impressive across his last two campaigns. In that span, he's combined to post 38 saves with a 159:50 K:BB across 129 innings. Robertson is likely to factor into the closer role with the Rangers, potentially splitting duties with Jose Leclerc.
